Water damage to ceiling presents itself as a discoloration. In most cases the modern ceiling is made of drywall and so we will deal with the steps you may need to follow if you have to repair a water damaged drywall ceiling.

The first step is to ensure that there is no mould growing on the water damaged ceiling area. The chances are that mould will have taken hold because, by the time the water damaged is noticed, a reasonably long period will have passed. Spraying the discolored area with a bleach/water solution will kill the mold and it will have an added effect of beginning the removal process of the water stain.

When the sprayed area has been allowed to completely dry – and this can be accelerated with the use of fans or open windows – the process of eliminating the discolored area can begin. In this case you will need a strong working primer that will seal the ceiling surface. Applying an oil based paint will ensure that the stain does not keep coming through. Also suitable for the job is a proprietary stain-blocker type of paint.

With any luck the worst kind of ceiling water damage you will experience will be this kind of minor damage where the major concerns are mould and water stains. For dealing with larger ceiling problems such as replacing the ceiling drywall it may be a good idea to seek help directly from a water damage repair specialist.  To repair water damaged ceiling is not an easy task if the damage is significant so don’t risk a bodge job, find the right professional for the job.
