Use Woodpecker Deterrents to Protect Your Home

If you live in a heavily wooded area in a rural setting, there is a decent chance that woodpeckers share the same habitat as you do. While woodpeckers usually tend to stay in trees, they have been known to attach themselves to the side of a house and pick away at the wood there. In fact, there have even been instances of woodpeckers poking holes in plastic siding as well. As a homeowner, you really don’t want this to happen since it usually translates into very high repair costs. In addition to the repairs, as anyone who has been near woodpeckers knows, they produce an ear popping loud noise which is almost impossible to sleep through. If you are in this situation, here are a few woodpeckers deterrent options that you can use to protect your house.

If you do a little research about products available to control these birds, you will probably see people selling reflective ribbon. While it is true that ribbon reflects bright light and scares birds away, it isn’t likely to work that well for woodpeckers. The reason is because it really only works when the sun is shining on it, and this doesn’t happen early in the morning or at dusk. In addition, nobody wants to wrap the entire house in reflective ribbon. Another choice is to get a scary looking balloon. These actually work quite well, but only in a small area. Hang one of them from a tree and there is a pretty good chance the woodpecker will never go in the tree again. They might be great for single trees, or one small area in your house, but they won’t work to protect the whole thing.  The same thing goes for bird deterrent spikes – they work great for other birds, but not woodpeckers.

If you’re looking for something that will protect your entire exterior of the house from bird infestation, what you need is an electronic deterrent. If you get one specifically made for woodpeckers, it will emit an alarm call that scares the dickens out of woodpeckers. These calls are recorded from natural woodpeckers in the wild, and some of them even have settings to choose between different species. One of these should enough to protect your entire house, since it will be heard from a great distance away.
