Did you know that there are literally hundreds of different types of mold that live in your home? And while most molds are harmless, there are a few that can be reek havoc on your allergies and some that can even be dangerous.
Alternia –This fungus can often be found in window frames, carpeting and textiles. It can cause allergies in humans as well as upper respiratory infections. If you find that you have this particular type of house mold you should remove it immediately and reduce humidity in the air by installing vents where moisture occurs the most.
Aspergillus – This fungus is actually a group of molds that can cause health problems in both humans and animals. These molds can cause, asthma, sinus allergies, chronic headache and severe damage to the lungs. Just as with Alternia, if you discover these molds in your home, they should be cleaned up immediately using a mold and mildew removal product.
Cladosporium – This fungus can be found in dead plants, woody plants, food, straw and soil. It is found more in the summer months than in the winter months and can cause asthma as well as pulmonary emphysema in humans. If you find this particular fungus in your home, you should remove it immediately using a mold cleaning product manufactured specifically for mold and protect yourself by wearing at the very minimal a pair of rubber gloves and a respiratory mask.
Stachybotrys – This is a toxic fungus, which is black in color and can be found on drywall, ceilings, baseboards and practically anywhere moisture occurs. Because this fungus is so toxic, anyone who breathes the spores into their lungs can develop cold or flu-like symptoms, headaches, fatigue, hair loss, bleeding of the lungs and in some cases, death. It is particularly dangerous to those with weak immune systems, the elderly and infants. If the amount of this toxic fungus is small, it may be possible to remove it yourself. However, in most cases it is advisable that you hire a professional to assist you in removing these particular types of mold.
