Top 3 Things I Learned From A Survival Blog

Since growing up in a rural setting, I fancied myself as someone who knew quite a bit about survival. I thought I pretty much knew everything there was about making do with what I had on hand. That was, until I started ready a survival blog and then another and another! I quickly learned that there was a whole lot of things I didn’t know! I’m glad I did finally give in and start doing more reading and research, because it has helped me in my preparedness plans.

The first thing I learned was that there were a lot of ways to store food long term. Before reading and researching, I thought the only way to store food was canning, freezing or dehydrating. But now I’ve learned there are foods like the Mountain House freeze dried foods that will last 25 years or more. I’m also learning what Supermarket foods I can buy that will last years instead of months (like dehydrated milk).

The next thing I learned was new techniques on how to store food like corn, rice, wheat, sugar, salt, etc. I had never given much thought to how these things could be stored for long periods. I actually thought that since I hunted, fished and grew a garden, I had all the food I would need! How naive is that!

Now I buy these staples in bulk and store them away in mylar bags and five gallon plastic buckets with sealed lids and stored in a safe, dry environment. I know that if I need these 10 years from now, I’ll have them!

Previously whenever I heard the word “Survivalist”, I had visions of Rambo living deep in the woods somewhere as a hermit. Now I know there are a lot of people like this, but the third thing, and maybe the most important thing I learned by reading a survival blog, is that there are way more average Joe’s out there preparing for the worse and hoping for the best. People like me!
