Okay, let’s face it. You haven’t given much thought, if any, to stockpiling food in case of an emergency. Have you? That’s what I thought. Neither has many other people. They falsely believe that the Government will swoop in and save them. Yeah right. Ever here of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina?
Long term food storage for an emergency isn’t as difficult as it seems. Even the U.S. Government says that every family should have at least a 3 days supply of food on hand in case of a natural disaster or other emergency. Even if you have a large family, that’s not a lot of food!
Some people think that stockpiling food is too expensive or time consuming. That’s not true either. Here are some tips to get you started putting back food in case of an emergency.
Start small. Whenever you’re at the grocery store and you’re buying canned goods, grab some extra for your food storage. Do this every time you go to the grocery store. You’ll soon find that your food stores are growing!
Dried beans and other legumes store well but should be put into a air tight container instead of left in the plastic bags.
Stockpiling food doesn’t have to cost any extra. Instead of grabbing that bag of candy or box of ice cream bars, use the money you’d spend on those items to buy food that will store long term. Get into a practice of this and you’ll soon find that you can do without a lot of junk food you normally carry home.
You can never have enough clean drinking water. Budget to buy your family a quality water filter like a Berkey. These come in several different sizes.
Also, don’t forget stuff you use on a regular basis like toilet paper, paper towels, coffee, tea, etc. If you had to shelter in place for more than a few days, you’d soon realize the little things you forgot to stock up on!
