Tips on Protecting Your Carport

As our economy continues to struggle, property crime is growing, and law enforcement is struggling. As a result, thieves are targeting residential garages, carports and storage buildings during the day and then return to clear them out at night .

With steel attached carports you can avoid the damage to your vehicles caused by the sun, leaves, pine cones, tree sap and other debris. Metal carports offer great protection your vehicle from the elements. Carports and garage parking will keep your camper van, mini bus, boat or car protected from ultraviolet rays during the summer months, while protecting the finish of the vehicle in adverse weather conditions throughout the winter. It is not just your vehicle that needs protecting, however. The carport or garage also needs protection.

If you don’t want to purchase a ready made carport that would need to be erected by a professional contractor then it may be worth buying a carport kit that you could erect yourself or with the aid of a friend.  A metal carport is probably the best type of kit to purchase as it will come cut to size and you will not need to fiddle with metal sheet cutting.

Remember to lock all doors and windows in your prefabricated garage and warehouse. If you have an open unit such as an open carport, cover your vehicle or boat cover and keep it well lit. All buildings and carports can be supplied with electricity. Moreover, solar or battery powered lights are available at any hardware store. The installation of lights on the outside of your unit, or keeping the interior lights on will significantly reduce your risks of becoming a victim of crime. Thieves will think someone is inside and leave your property alone.

Also consider installing small solar lights along the path leading to your garage, carport or storage building. Not only is this good for security but also for your own safety. A well-lit path is not a path a thief wants to take. Some also suggest leaving a radio or television on, which makes robbers believe that someone is near. These do not need to be left on all the time but could be connected to a small timer which is programmed to switch the appliance on at particular times.

Installing a camera or video recording device outside the garage or carport also helps to deter potential thieves.

There are many ways to protect your garage or carport. It is worthwhile checking with the local police for more tips and news of recent thefts in your area.
