Every item whether it is a toothbrush, a couch, a bed, or a chest of drawers, has a divine history to it. Dresser sets have not always been around, before then people have had to find different areas in their homes to store items. Dressers can be dated back to the late 16th century deriving from coffers, which were the first hinged lid box ever made.Dressers were not in as much demand as they are now, considering over the years, people generally own more stuff. Before the constant need for storage space, expanded shelving, and closets, there was not a general storage area for everyday household items. The creation of dressers helped keep safe personal and valuable items. Until a chests of drawers was discovered, many people would turn to small hinged boxes to keep very personal items or jewelry for special events.
Items such as a small elegant box or extra storage space, were considered a luxury, and were not something open to commoners of society. The people who were able to obtain such items were high society and of a lot of money. An item that served the purpose of a dresser at this point in time were actually coffers and considered very exclusive at this point in time. Especially any kind that is well crafted from a finer wood, like a mahogany chest of drawers or an oak chest of drawers. In today’s world, dressers are considered a must-have item in almost every household in order to find extra storage space, or serve as a decorating purpose.
Pushing toward the late17th century and around the time of the Renaissance, coffers began to evolve into a piece of furniture that had a small compartment or a single drawer for extra storage and was known to be a mule chest. These chests were given to people in the form of wedding gifts to the new couple from the bride’s family. As wedding gifts these cassone’s were decorated pieces with lots of color and intricate designs in honor of the marriage.
As time went on little storage units utilized early in time evolved into larger pieces of furniture consisting of more drawers and hinged tops. Later to come were smaller side tables with one or two drawers known as nightstands that were a fraction of the size of a standard dresser. Having a chest of drawers use to be a privilege, and now it is a necessity in modern day homes for style and storage.
