I recently started redesigning my garage storage set up. It took the dawn of of the new year and an extra paycheck, courtesy of a very welcome Christmas bonus, to give me the motivation to tackle such a project. We had already installed a number of really good wall mounted shelves into the garage, but this wasn’t enough for all our stuff. While it’s nice to imagine we could easily just get rid of things and have extra room, the reality was, we have a lot of stuff, and it’s not going to be enough to just sell a few things. (Couple this with Christmas having just passed, and we have even more stuff, too!)
While I know there are a ton of neat garage storage products out there, I started looking into repurposes some other storage type products where the price is lower but the function is the same. I realized a stand alone closet or a portable wardrobe would provide me with extra storage, be something I can buy at my local Target for under $100, and install easily without having to mount anything into the wall – something that’s nice since some of my equipment got stolen from my truck bed last Thanksgiving.
While you might imagine having something that is sold in the same class or style as wardrobe closets would be an odd choice for garage storage, it’s actually great. Stand alone closets are not crappy little flimsy storage units like many other cheaper storage products. They’re bulky and solid, much like old fashioned armoire furniture is, as it’s basically a modern wardrobe closet.
It’s also something that stands up to weather quite nicely, especially compared to trying to re-purpose an old bookshelf or whatever and put it in the garage. Those get warped quite easily – trust me, I know, because I’ve done to three old bookshelves already!
