Should You Tackle Your Home Remodeling Project?

Prior to remodeling the attic to gain that office or extra bedroom some research should be done. Especially to the do it yourself-er who hasn’t tackled this size of a project before. Number one, is the attic easily accessible and is that access good for the proposed use?

It is a great idea to draw up the plans for the new room and then make an appointment to discuss those plans with a building inspector or an architect to make sure they plans are up to code and if the dream idea can become a reality. Also, if plumbing or electricity will need to be added as a result of the renovation check around for reputable contractors and if possible use a contractor that comes with references from friends and family you trust. Safety is the most important item to consider when remodeling any home.

What about temperature control in the attic? The remodeling may also require that new ventilation be added to the attic or additional layers of insulation be added to keep the room energy efficient and temperature controlled. Looking into the addition of air ducts is a good idea as well. If the room doesn’t have good lighting then the addition of a window or two will allow natural lighting to be used instead of just lamps or ceiling lights.

Last but not least test the sturdiness of the attic floor joists to make sure that the addition of the weight of desks, filing cabinets, a bed, dresser or chest of drawers and a television will not fall through the ceiling of the rest of the house. Remodeling or renovating the attic into a useful space may sound scary but after all the hard work is complete and if done properly the room will be one that is enjoyed for many years.
