Setting Up Home, Room by Room

Setting up home for the first time can be a daunting business, but after you have done it once, it becomes easier each time you move to a new area. If you are thinking about getting your very first “own place” often you can rent an apartment that already has furniture. Eventually though, you will want to get your own, so you can add your own style to the place. This will be especially true when you reach the point of buying your home.

If you are just buying home number one, then you might decide that you want to a lot of improvements to all the rooms. The best way to do it is one room at a time – unless of course you have the money to hire a team of builders and interior designers! If you attack the project all at once, the whole house, it could be months before you are finished, and during that renovation period, you will be perpetually surrounded by dust and building materials.

So decide on a priority for each room and complete each one before moving onto the next. If you practically live in the kitchen, and use it for relaxing and chatting and socializing when friends visit, then do the kitchen first. This includes getting the furniture, so you’ll need a good dining table and chairs, plus all the cooking and food storage appliances. The dining room table will be the hub of the house if you are a “kitchen person” so best to invest in a good quality one.

If you only use the kitchen for cooking and eating, but have a living room for winding down after work, or for watching a little television, then make this a priority room – a perfect little haven in an otherwise chaotic unfinished house! Make it cosy with your favorite styles of furniture. Another high priority room is the main bedroom, so you can get a peaceful night’s sleep. If you work long hours in your day job, this might be the first room you do.

So once you have moved into your new home and decided to update the whole house, attack it in bite sized pieces. Get the living room, kitchen, a bedroom and the bathroom done in whichever priority is right for you; then fix up any other bedrooms, an office, entrance halls and others. This way, you will see progress happening as you complete each room.
