Quick Summer Lawn Tips For Homeowners

You know what you need for your lawn this summer? …a complete overhaul right? Your grass looks terrible and the neighbors are complaining to the area association! I know that is what you are thinking because the crab grass is taking over and the insects are destroying the turf from the ground up. The lawn thatch layer is super thick, and you can’t or won’t water the grass. On top of that, the mowing, trimming and edging are chores left to the kids. Your lawn is trashed; it’s 95 degrees outside and you are about to go on vacation. What can you do?

Here are two simple tips for you that I hope will change the whole thing around.

Mow Tall, Mow Consistent

One of the biggest problems garden lawns have is they are cut incorrectly. Mowing the lawn is not something you can take lightly. In fact, it is probably the most important task in the lawn care bag of tricks.

When you mow, make sure you are not taking off more than 1/4th of the grass blade in a single cutting. That means you need to mow tall, especially when it is hot outside. In addition, you need to mow consistently meaning you cannot afford to miss even one week of cutting. When you let the lawn get too tall, you are bound to give it a shock the next time you do mow because you are taking off too much.

Water Regular and Deeply

You need to water the lawn or it will go into summer dormancy. Watering is not difficult if you get into a habit of it. Place the sprinkler out in each area of the lawn twice per week and run it for about an hour. This will, in most cases, lay down about 1/2 of water which is enough to soak into the root system where it can be used properly. I also recommend you never water in the evenings. Plus, watering in the morning is easier; just turn on the sprinkler when you go out for the morning paper, and turn it off on your way out the door headed to work. How is that for simple?

If you follow these simple summer lawn tips, you are sure to have some success in keeping that patch or yard healthy and green all year long! Of course, then comes the fall time when we have an entirely different set of lawn care chores to undertake! Whoever said lawn care was simple anyway?
