When you decide to build a patio on your property, there are many design options, patio ideas, and building materials to choose from. Consider all the material options you have in order to match your patio to the exterior of your home and the landscape on your property.
Here is an outlines of types of patios available;
Brick Patios
Brick patio ideas will help you build a patio that looks very solid and sophisticated. You don’t need a brick home to have a brick patio and in fact sometimes it looks better if you don’t have both because there is a better contrast. To build a brick patio you may either dry-lay the brick or mortar the bricks together. To match the patio to the exterior of your home, you may choose patio bricks in various color shades, from shades of gray to shades of brown and red. Try and make sure the patio roofing also matches the exterior of your home.
Concrete Slab
Another way to build a patio on your property is to pour a concrete pad in the intended shape of the patio surface. The finished patio will appear gray to white in color and feature numerous expansion joints. Building a concrete slab patio allows you to more easily pour the patio in any thickness or shape.
Stone Patios
For a wider range of color choices and design options, use stones to build your patio. When using stones to build a patio you may choose from river rock, flagstones, cobblestones and naturally jagged-shaped stones. Like brick, you can construct stone patios with mortar or by dry-laying the stones together on a sand bed, with sand to fill the joints between the stones. You may also remove sod, sink patio stones into the ground and use grass to fill the joints between stones.
Paver Patios
Just like building stone and brick patios, patio pavers may be built by dry-laying or through the use of mortar. Patio pavers are already cut into flat stones that you can more easily manipulate when constructing the patio. You may find patio pavers made of stone, concrete and brick and in a wider variety of colors than those available in regular stone and brick.
Don’t forget, if building your own patio, you may want to add a patio roof. These types of patio covers are great to use in the rain during the winter or even as a sun shelter on a hot summers day.
