Outdoor Dining Furniture Styles

From mahogany to mosaic and rattan to wrought iron, the style of your outdoor dining furniture should go beyond mere utility to reflect and complement the décor of your garden or outdoor space.

Classic outdoor dining furniture usually forms a matching set, often in wood or another traditional material, perhaps in the form of four chairs around a central table with a parasol. These sets can be quite formal and even ornamental if made from, for example, wrought iron. They come in different sizes and you can choose from a variety of shapes for the table, including round, square and oval.

A rustic style can be achieved using synthetic rattan and wicker, or rougher wood furniture – even sometimes including the bark. These outdoor furniture sets can look more rugged, hand-made or even home-made; they may add charm to your outdoors and will be well suited to more informal use such as lounging or enjoying drinks. Often they look best on a lawn, under a tree or in another natural space rather than on a patio or decking.

Bistro sets are small and easy to fit into nooks, usually comprising only a couple of chairs and a tiny table-top. These can be made of many different materials but normally they are metal or plastic/resin in a smart finish and do bring with them a little of the ‘pavement café’ atmosphere of the European Continent. Ideal for use on a patio, especially if only one or two of you are enjoying an aperitif or eating a light meal!

Modern styles of outdoor furniture may use aluminium, glass or plastics of various types to create a smooth, sophisticated line and look.  Rattan wicker garden furniture is also a great choice, if a little more rustic looking.  Weigh up the character of your garden and decide whether it’s too groomed for rustic charm or too up-to-date for classic wood. If so, a more contemporary look may add just the right air of sleek chic to your outdoor dining.
