Low Voltage vs. Solar Landscape Lighting

As more and more people are turning to a more eco-friendly and energy saving solution for everything, solar and low voltage landscape lighting has become two of the most popular choices in landscape lighting.  Apart from the minimal energy it consumes, solar and low voltage lighting systems are incredibly easy to install and are within reasonable budget.  But exploring the different strengths and weaknesses of both lighting systems can help you weight options and figure where best to set up these energy saving lighting systems.

Installation

Compared to high voltage lighting systems, low voltage lighting systems are easy to install and to operate.  But for elaborate lighting plans, you may need assistance from a professional.  Solar landscape lights, on the other hand needs no installation.  Just set it up where it could an ample amount of sunshine during day time and watch it glow during night time.  Most solar garden lights are equipped with sensors that automatically activate the light once the sun starts to set.

Longevity

In low voltage lighting system, the bulbs will eventually burn out and will need to be replaced.  The same goes with the wiring.  Once it is damaged, it needs to be replaced right away to make sure that they remain in tip top condition.  With solar lights, the LED lights need not to be replaced.  Compared to other light sources, LED lights last longer, sometimes, up to 10 years.  However, you need to keep the solar panels free from dirt to keep it in good condition.

Quality of light

Solar lights fall short when it comes to providing high quality light.  There is also no way to control the amount of light it emanates.  It also does not cover enough ground so it might not be an option if you’re opting to improve the security of your property.  Plus, since it emits less light than low voltage lights, you may need to put up extra fixtures to illuminate an area.

Low voltage lights on the other hand, emit an ample amount of light to illuminate pathways and other areas of your yard.  They can also be expanded according to your needs.

Conclusion

Although solar lights are more efficient than low voltage lights, it still falls short in the quality of light it emits.  Solar lights are only good where it can get as much sunlight as it can during day time and where there is little need for lights.  On the other hand, if you have security in mind, low-voltage lights are still the best option.
