Keeping your Marble Surfaces Clean

Having marble is one of the most beautiful surface materials to have in your home. While it very elegant and sophisticated to have, it is one of the trickiest surfaces to clean. Here are some tips on how to keep your beautiful marble surfaces clean.

One of the first things to know is that marble is not like granite and cannot be cleaned like granite. While it is a very hard surface, it is much softer than granite and cannot be cleaned with the same materials. In addition, never use vinegar as a cleaning agent, or use products that have some sort of vinegar product in them. Also do not use cleaners that have a high acidic content. The acidity of it will etch and dull the surface.

How to clean marble countertops: For everyday cleaning of marble countertops and other surfaces, use warm distilled water with a soft cloth. Marble shows water spots very easily so after wiping the surface with water, dry it with a soft microfiber cloth.

If a cleaner is needed, use one that has a pH neutral content. Products like acetone can be used on dark marble and for light marble use hydrogen peroxide. If you are worried about damaging the marble, contact a stone retailer to see which products they recommend. Once you are done cleaning it, be sure to wipe it down with warm water, until there is no residue left, and always dry it with a soft cloth.

If you stain your marble, you can purchase marble stain remover or make your own. First you will need to determine the base of a stain. If it is an acidic stain, such as from wine or orange juice create a mixture of water and baking soda. Add enough water to the baking soda mixture until it is a peanut butter consistency. For oil based stains, like a grease stain, make the mixture with rubbing alcohol. For water based stains, use either hydrogen peroxide or acetone.

By knowing how to clean your marble properly will help keep it in pristine condition for many years. If you still have reservations about cleaning your marble, contact the manufacture that you bought it from for specific instructions.
