There are many different tools that are required for the gardener to run the day to day maintenance tasks involved with keeping everything orderly and growing strongly. With some of these tools it is not particularly important that they are the absolute top quality available. But with some tools you should go for the absolute best quality you can afford and hand pruners are one of these tools.
Hand pruners are also known as secateurs and they are necessary for the upkeep of plants and shrubs throughout the yard. Whether it is for trimming off a dead twig or removing spent flower heads your hand pruners should always be close to hand as you move around the garden.
There are two chief types of hand pruners available: anvil pruners and bypass pruners. Anvil pruners consist of a single cutting blade that closes against a blunt fixed piece for the cutting to take place. Bypass pruners consist of a couple of moving blades that bypass each other as the blades of a pair of scissors do.
Both of these types of hand pruners do much the same job but the bypass pruners allow you to make your cut closer to the branch when removing a twig. You would be more advised to use your bypass pruners on the softer herbaceous stems to avoid damaging them and the anvil pruners on the larger, older stems that require a little more power.
One of the keys to getting the most out of your hand pruners is to keep them clean and free of dirt as much as possible. After each use they should be cleaned to remove any matter that may have been picked up during use. Giving the blades a wipe down with oil will also help to keep them in good condition. Periodically it will be necessary to sharpen the blades so that the pruners continue to make good clean cuts.
