Push button locks are perhaps one of the most popular types of locks bought when it comes to home security. They are generally fairly simple to install, at least the more basic types, and they are also very easy to use. Another positive feature is that they do not rely on keys to control the locking mechanism.
You can find electronic and mechanical push button locks, both heavy duty and medium duty. For home use the medium duty electronic lock is usually used. For offices or apartment building, the heavy duty kind is normally chosen.
Advantages
The main advantage that a push button lock has over traditional locks is that you do not need to use keys or key cards. To enter, you punch in a pre-coded security sequence of numbers. These number sequences are relatively easy to change, and with most electronic locks you can have several different sequences in use.
Disadvantages
Mechanical locks are sometimes a little unwieldy to manage and difficult for the elderly, or young children to open. Electronic locks that are hooked up to the electrical system may fail to open when the electricity goes off unless they have a backup battery power source.
Cost
While larger and more programmable locks can be fairly expensive, the regular home push button lock is relatively inexpensive, even when compared to other locking systems. For example, you can find suitable locks for as little as $60 though some may cost up to $150 or so, depending on the additional features the lock has.
Heavier duty, commercial models are naturally usually a little more expensive. Here you would be looking at around $300 on up for a system.
While the smaller push button locks used for home use are usually relatively simple for most home owners to install, the larger commercial locks will need the skills of a professional during installation in most cases.
