How to Prevent Lawn Disease

There are quite a few things that can go wrong with your lawn, but perhaps the most daunting is the lawn disease. It induces a feeling of helplessness. What do I do now? My grass is dying and I feel like there is nothing that I can do about it. One of the problems is that it can be extremely difficult to identify and distinguish which disease our lawn actually has or if it is even a disease at all. Dollar spot disease and take all root rot can be particularly difficult to determine. Sometimes pests and poor maintenance can cause a lawn to look like it is diseased. The whole situation can be quite frustrating and daunting to say the least.

However, there are things that can be done to prevent diseases in the first place. This is the ideal method of dealing with lawn diseases. The best prevention is avoiding the conditions that foster disease in the first place. These can include things such as heavy thatch, moisture in the evenings, cutting with dull mower blades, poor drainage, drought, over fertilizing, and overall neglect of your lawn. Just like your body, a healthy lawn is far less likely to get sick.

Let’s lay out some tips for preventing lawn disease. When mowing your lawn, confirm that your blade is not only sharp but cutting at a reasonable height. If you cut too low or scalp your lawn, it will make the lawn more susceptible to disease. If you already have a lawn disease, make sure to bag the clippings when your mow! You should always water your lawn early in the morning so that the grass has sunlight during the day to dry it out. Prolonged periods of moisture (like watering at night) will make your grass more disposed to disease. Make sure to properly fertilize your lawn by consulting charts either on the bag or online to determine how much you should spread out on your lawn based on size.
