How to Organize a Closet

Most of us have a closet or two that we have been meaning to organize for some time. This is not the most exciting task, so we keep putting it off. How can we get motivated? Well, different things motivate different people. Some of us need the promise of a reward for completing a job like this. For others, just the satisfaction of a job well done can be enough reward.

If you fall into the reward group, go ahead and decide that how you will celebrate when your closet organizing is completed. If you still aren’t excited, entertaining yourself with your favorite CD may do the trick. My personal favorite motivational trick is to promise myself that I will only work at this task for 15 minutes and then stop. Once I get 15 minutes into the job, I usually can see the light at the end of the tunnel and can finish up the task.

The first step to organize a closet is to remove everything. Separate the items into four piles: keep in the closet, find a new spot, trash and give away. At this point check to see if you need any closet organizers to hold the remaining items. You may need a whole are closet organization system or simply a few simple organizers such as additional shelves or storage boxes. If you are working in a child’s bedroom, there are special closet organizers just for kids.

This may be a stopping point if you need to purchase closet organizers. You should not put the items back in until you have your organizers. You may surprised to see that you will be able to fit a lot more in the closet after this purging and organization process. If you are lucky, you will even have a little extra space left over for future stuff!
