How To Keep Pests Out Of The Garden

As a garden-owner, you’ll want to be selective about what flora and fauna is allowed into your garden.  There are all sorts of pests that people hate and it really depends on the individual.  Pests you might want to keep away include birds, deer, foxes, moles, aphids and such like.  Obviously, you will want to deal with the pests differently because keeping deer out of your garden is going to be very different from keeping birds away.

Deer - Although a lot of people have a romantic idea about deer due to movies such as Bambi, a lot of gardeners want to keep them away because deer tend to do a lot of damage to plants.  The first thing to think about would be to install a deer fence.  This should be high enough for them to be unable to jump over.  There are also plants that deer simply don’t like and these include Yarrow, Bugleweed, Bellflower and Tickseed.

Birds - If you want to keep birds away from plants then your best bet is to simply use some sort of netting.  It’s important that the netting is not placed right against the plants otherwise the birds can still get easy access to your fruit and berries.  There are also additional measures you can take including pasting sticky gel onto the branches and also using scare balloons or electronic pest repellers.

Moles - Those who love to have a perfectly smooth and green lawn absolutely detest moles.  This is because they create mounds of earth all over your lawn which don’t exactly look pretty.    There are different opinions about how much damage moles really do to your garden.  Some argue that they are actually very good for the soil because they help to break it up and aerate it in a similar way to earthworms.  If you do still want rid of them there are traps you can buy and there’s also a device you can place into the ground that emits a noise that the moles hate so they simply keep away.
