How does Lawn Aeration benefit my Lawn?

Lawn Aeration Benefits your lawn in the following ways:

If the soil is dry or compacted, it loosens up the soil and allowing air, water and nutrients direct access to the the root system.  Aeration is especially needed in areas of the country where you have clay or hilly soils.  Another positive effect of using a lawn aerator is that  it also promotes deeper root growth.  As the temperature rises, holes left by core aerators can allow the soil more room for expansion.

Another benefit of lawn aeration is that it aids when you what to improve the look of your lawn by watering, seeding or fertilizing.  For instance, after aerating, new seed will stick to the soil and have an easier time germinating.  In most areas of the country lawn experts recommend that you aerate once every 3 years.  If your soil gets extra compacted because of a pet, you may need to do this more often.  In very clay or mountainous areas, soil may need to be aerated on a yearly or even a semi-annual basis.

Their are several different type of aerators you can use.  These range from a hand aerator to a machine aerator to a liquid aerator.  Their are pros and cons to each different type. A hand aerator is probably the least expensive type but it is the most time consuming to use.  These typically cost $25 to $30.  Liquid aerators work for some yards but not all.  The price for a liquid aerator is $30-$40.  Machine aerator and mechanical ones are the quickest to use.  Occasionally you can rent these machine for as little as $40.  To buy one of these new could cost $1800 to $4000.  Another possible alternative if you have a riding lawn mower is to buy and attachment that you can tow behind your unit and use this unit for aerating your lawn.
