Home Improvement on a New Home

When you buy a home, there is always a bit of home improvement to do to it. It is best to do the things you can do on your own first, because this will save a lot of money.  People often think about new home gift ideas that they can bring when they come to visit.  I always reject these and say if they want to bring a gift they can help out with some decorating for a few hours! – tongue in cheek of course but many people do like to help!

One home improvement project that we did to our home was to paint the outside of our home. We started out by using a power washer to remove as much of the old paint as we could. Next we took scrapers and removed the rest of the old paint. Picking out the color we wanted our house to be was a lot of fun. We decided to do the trim and the main part of the house in different colors. We spent several days with a brush to paint the entire house. We left the brick the original color, but you can paint over brick also if you want to do this. Our house looks amazing from just this little effort! Doing this project yourself can be very cheap. It only cost us about $150 to do the entire house.

Our next project is going to be improving our home by replacing the light switch covers and changing out some lights to use a dimmer switch. The light over our fireplace is going to have a dimmer switch on it. This will improve the look of this area and also save money on electric bills. We have picked out switch covers for every room to match the decor. We are also going to spray foam around the inside of the light covers. This will help with our heating and cooling bills. This entire project will not cost much at all, but will save money on bills and make our house look better.

Home improvement can be a lot of fun and a great thing to do as a family.
