If there is one chore that I do not like, it is cleaning the grout in my bathroom. No matter how careful I am, the grout always seems to get dirty. Since I really do not like this chore, my instinct is to put it off until absolutely necessary. However, I have discovered that it is actually easier if I do a little grout cleaning every week rather than waiting. Regular grout maintenance is perhaps the greatest of all the grout cleaning tips you can follow.
If you spend only twenty minutes each week scrubbing your grout, then you will be able to avoid the marathon cleaning sessions that require intense industrial cleaners that are toxic and heavy duty grout cleaning machines. Regular grout cleaning can be accomplished with simple household items and a handheld brush. Grout is a porous material and for that reason, it attracts dirt, bacteria, mold, and mildew and those unwanted things are trapped in the grout. You might not even notice at first, but over time the dirt will become more noticeable.
Since I have resigned myself to the fact that I need to clean my grout every week, I have discovered a few ways to make the time pass more quickly while performing this task. First, I like to listen to music. Singing along will lift my spirits and scrubbing along to the beat keeps me motivated and moving in the right direction. If I am not in the mood for singing or music then I can listen to books on tape. Again, having something else to occupy my mind makes the time go by more quickly and I am finished with my cleaning before you know it. Finally, I try to multitask. The grout that needs the most cleaning is in my shower, so I spend a few minutes every day at the beginning of my shower scrubbing a section of grout. At the end of the week, I have scrubbed the entire shower. Then I get to start over.
While paying so much attention to my grout might seem like overkill, there is a reason I like to keep on top of it. Of course, I like the way the room looks when it is clean. But more importantly, keeping the grout looking nice is one way to ensure the resale value of my property. People are more likely to buy a home that is clean and obviously well kept than one that looks like it will need a lot of love when the new owners move in.
