Futon Beds: A Great, Versatile Choice

Futon beds are beds that also double as chairs, loveseats and sofas. During the daytime, you fold the frame and the mattress so that the furniture provides seating. When you need a place to sleep, you unfold the frame so that the mattress is flat, and you have an instant bed. You can purchase a futon sofa bed in a variety of sizes from one suitable for one person to one big enough for two to sleep with plenty of elbow, knee and tossing and turning room. The sizes range from single or twin, to California king, but double or full-size futons which sleep two just like a double bed are the most popular size.

A futon bed in the living room, family room or den provides a great place for seating and a handy place for an overnight guest to sleep. But futons are also popular in bedrooms. Kids and teens can fold the bed up during the day to have a couch and a lot more space and then unfold the futon to sleep at night. This handiness has made them popular in dorm rooms where space is at a premium.

Futon bunk beds are also great for a kid’s room. These typically have a single mattress on top as the top bunk, with a double futon down below. During the day, the unit serves as a top bunk and a couch, but the whole futon bunk bed combination can sleep three at night.

Futon Sofa Bed Sizes

Double futons are the most popular size for a few reasons. First, they provide a couch for seating .Single futons are more like oversized chairs and this doesn’t make the single futon particularly good to sleep on. The double unit is a bigger piece of furniture. If bigger were always better then queen and king sized futons would be more popular. But because the futon is essentially a frame that folds the mattress into seating, the larger sizes can be awkward. As the mattress folds, the larger sizes allow more of the mattress to make up the back of the couch and it can seem too high.

The double mattress is just the right size to split between the seat and the back of the frame. You also really can’t seat anymore people on a queen futon than you can a double, and the size of the futon mattress isn’t enough to make a huge difference in the quality of sleep on one. A king offers a large enough mattress for room and comfort also, but the dimensions of the futon bed can seem strange when it’s folded into a sofa. The larger mattresses are also heavier and harder to fold, making the double futon bed the easiest one to manipulate when you want seating for 2 or 3 and sleeping room for 2.
