The Modern Dressing Table

Back in the 17th century when dressing tables first gained popularity in France, they were little more than a wash-basin hung between 2 pieces of wood and mounted on a trolley so they could be wheeled around. Fast forward 400 years and we find that things have changed quite dramatically since then.

The modern dressing table is a functional and beautiful piece of furniture, often supplied in a dressing table set with a Mirror and a stool, and available in a variety of different styles and build quality.

There are 3 main types of dressing table:

1. The Double Pedestal Dressing Table
2. The Single Pedestal Dressing Table
3. The Console Style Dressing Table

The Single Pedestal Dressing Table is probably the most popular, offering as it does an excellent compromise between the size (and cost) of the double pedestal counterpart and the somewhat limiting (although equally as stylish) console style dressing table. By single pedestal we typically mean that the dressing table will have a set of drawers or a cupboard positioned on the left or right hand side of the table, which differs from the double pedestal which should have drawers to either side.

As you can imagine the double pedestal will provide the most storage space, but you should choose these wisely, because they can also be quite large and will not fit in every space. The console table on the other hand should be considered if you have very little available space in your room. These are more like desks with no side drawers or cupboards and consequently can be bought in just about any size and any price.

All of the above styles of dressing table are available in a huge choice of materials ranging from the cheaper end of the scale in plywood and chipboard right through the the solidly built real wooden materials such as pine or oak.

If you can afford it then you really should go for the solid wood dressing table, these may be more expensive in the short term but in the long run will provide far more value; they could even be considered a family heirloom and passed onto your children after you are gone.

Overall dressing tables have come along way since their humble beginnings, and with so much history behind them it impossible to imagine a ladies bedroom without one.
