Double futons aren’t just for dorm rooms, no matter what the popular opinion on them might be. Futon beds are highly adaptable and come in many shapes and sizes so it is relatively easy to find one that matches your home or house decor.

Since the futon doubles as a seating and sleeping area, you’ll want to make a careful choice in its mattress. Choose an uncomfortable mattress and no one will want to sit or sleep there. A double futon is also known as a full-size futon, and sleeps two people. As long as you purchase a standard double mattress designed for this type of furniture, then you can purchase any type you want. Wool and cotton blends are exceedingly soft and comfortable, or you can choose foam that offers more firmness and rigidity. There are pillow-topped mattresses available for futons today that can offer extra comfort both as seating and sleeping. And remember that the thicker the mattress is, the more comfortable it will probably be. Double futons are the most popular size sold today. The full-size mattress on this type of furniture measures 54″ x 75″. This provides seating for two or three and easy sleeping for two people. A queen futon, on the other hand, has a slightly larger mattress at 60″ x 80″. The extra 5 inches all around isn’t going to make that much of a difference in size of the seating or sleeping area, but it tends to make the folded futon seem a bit awkward because the back extends higher. It’s also heavier and bulkier, so most people prefer double futons. If you want the mattress to be longer rather than wider, choose a long double at 54″ x 80″ and you’ll queen-sized length without adding anymore width. A single futon is a very small version and is often not large enough to sleep comfortable on but makes a reall nice lounging chair.
