Do It Yourself Home Security And Surveillance Systems
When you decide you need a home security system and your budget does not need the pressure of buying and installing an elaborate system, you can still establish a do-it-yourself home security system and not break your bank in half.
It begins by making sure your home perimeters are safe and secured. If you have fencing you should be sure they are in excellent repair; if you have hedges surrounding your grounds, you should be sure they are healthy and fully maintained. If your home includes outside hatch doors to your basement, be sure the hatches and doors are in excellent condition and locked down properly, with locks difficult if not impossible for intruders to break.
Home surveillance systems do not have to be budget busters, especially if you are willing to install them yourself and you make a realistic assessment of your home’s dimensions, property line dividers, and accessibility.
One of the best things you can install yourself is a motion-sensor outside light. As a matter of fact, installing one over your front door, over your garage, and over your side or back or patio door is a good idea and not terribly expensive if you know what to hunt. Most of the good-priced home and garden outlets sell them. They are a very effective first means of deterring trouble.
However, they are not the only means. Motion sensors can be installed inside your home, preferably in hallways and perhaps in your living room as well. Be sure to install only the absolute minimum your home should require, especially if you are nervous (properly) about false alarms. You can also install a relatively inexpensive home alarm system that makes a loud racket when tripped.
Your power strips can double as a do-it-yourself home security system. Many of them now come with timers that will throw lights on at certain intervals; others are adaptable to timing devices easily enough. However, you may want to stagger those every day the better to keep a would-be intruder from studying your home and determining regular patterns. They can also be tied to an alarm that will blast if movement is sensed, though you will want to use that feature only if you are not at home.
You can even install a security camera in a spot where any intruder will see it—the sight itself is often enough to discourage them—and connect it to either your home video recording system or your computer. If an intruder should get into your home in spite of the system you have installed, the camera should record an image clear enough for police to use to find and arrest the intruder.
As with anything else involving protection of your home, do scrupulous research and examination and then judge accordingly for what you absolutely need within your budget. Then shop around diligently to find the equipment that works best for your money. In addition, remember that you are doing yourself a larger favor than just protecting your home: a good, serviceable apartment surveillance system, even gathered and installed on a budget, boosts the resale value of your home.
