Depending on where you live the quality of your water supply can vary significantly. In hard water areas in particular lime scale is a constant and unpleasant reminder of this fact. Not only will your electric kettle fur up and become virtually impossible to clean over time, you will start to find small lumps of lime scale in your hot drinks. This is what usually prompts people living in such areas to invest in a water filter. This solves the problem of the lime scale and improves the taste of the drinks considerably, while in its own way promoting better health.
There are three small drawbacks to a water filter, assuming the water is used for hot drinks as well as cold. One is the need to replace the filter cartridges. While they do last for about two months of medium use, and have a handy system on the lid of the filter to let you know when it is time to replace them, the cartridges are fairly expensive. For me, this is a small price to pay for clean water, especially when you consider the price of bottled water.
The second drawback, again a small one, is the space they take up. In a small kitchen having a kettle and a water filter on the work top can make things a little cluttered, especially for keen cooks who may like to keep an array of useful utensils and appliances to hand. Third is the small annoyance of having to fill the filter, allow it to drain, and then transfer the water to the kettle. A small chore in the great scheme of things, considering the benefits of using clean water to make your drinks, but one you could sometimes be without.
There is a better way of course, courtesy of Britta, the leading water filter manufacturer. Their introduction of the electric kettle water filter has at least solved two of the drawbacks of the original water filter design. Now it’s a simpler job – just fill up the kettle, let the water filter drain through, and switch it on. Not only that, but now you don’t need to find a space for the water filter, creating a little more space in the kitchen. I have one and I can say I am very happy with it. The only thing I would like to see changed is for Britta to introduce some longer lasting, and preferably cheaper, filter cartridges.
