Cheap Flooring for Children’s Rooms

You can usually have a lot of fun decorating a child’s room especially when they are too young to have an opinion and are not yet insisting on the latest gruesome cartoon character bedding that you have no idea how you are going to match up.

With a young child you can really go to town with color and accessories to create a fantasy bedroom whether that is a pirate theme or a room fit for a fairy princess.

But whether you have a pirate or a princess in the making you will need to consider flooring for the room. The easiest thing to do would be to carpet the whole room in tough, resilient yet soft wool carpet. This would mean that you child could comfortably play on the floor with games and toys. If you prefer a hard surface, then solid wood flooring works well in a bedroom provided that you soften it with floor rugs or a large area rug.

If you are challenged in terms of budget however then these surfaces are likely to be too expensive, ideal although they are. In that case you need to look at other options.

If your floorboards are in a good state of repair then you could get them sanded and sealed to provide an attractive hard surface. Combine this with a play rug or two and you have a floor which will work well. Alternatively you could lightly sand and then paint the boards in a color which goes well with the room – perhaps white or cream for a princess bedroom or sea blue for your little pirate. Protect the floor with a coat of varnish after painting and use a rug so that your child has a comfortable place to play on the floor.

Other ideas for cheap floors include covering the whole area with vinyl. This can be a little cold and hard but it covers an unattractive floor fairly economically – and you won’t have too much trouble clearing up spills or modeling clay which has been trodden into the floor – one definite advantage over carpet.
