How To Make A Braided Rug

Braided rugs can add beauty to your room, but they can be very expensive. You can still have a beautiful braided rug and save money if you know how to make one.

First of all, it’s important to know that there are two different materials you can choose from when making a braided rug. Wool will cost you more, but it will last longer. If you choose to use real rags, it will be much cheaper, but will not last as long. If you use rags, it’s as easy as finding old clothes and cutting them into strips.

Start by cutting the material into two inch strips. If the material is thinner, cut wider, if it’s thicker, cut narrower.

Next find a spindle that won’t move. A spindle on a sewing machine is perfect. Holding taut, but not too tight, make a three strip braid, just like you are braiding someone’s hair. To join strips, hold the right angles together, and make a square. Sew a diagonal seam across the square and trim the excess. When you start to braid, turn each edge toward the center, then fold over at the center.

Finally, on a flat surface, the top of a table or a floor will work just fine, sew it together. It would be a good idea to use a darning needle for this step. Using a heavy string, lace the rug like you would lace your shoes. Find where you want the first braid to be, turn the braid back on itself and lace the loop to the loop next to it. Sew and loop until it’s as big as you want the braided rug to be. Make the last loops narrower, and tack the ends of the braid to the next braid.

Your braided rug is done!
