Unless you take care of the most basic construction steps in your home, there will be problems popping out at the most unexpected places. Basement insulation is amongst one of those basic steps and one of the most important steps when fixing issues in a house for various reasons. A poorly insulated home will radiate heat in winter and loose cool air in the summer resulting in higher energy bills.
Not only are you going to have to pay more at the end of the month, but the level of comfort will be hindered as well. When heat is escaping at the basement level, even the floor of the ground level will feel cold to the feet. Since it does not take much to do it well the first time around, taking a few extra steps of precaution can put you on the right way, and save money on your bills later on.
Well insulated basements are warmer during winter and colder during summer. If the only purpose of the cellar will be storing equipment, you do not have to do it; tools do not complain. But completing this project will help you cut on the recurring bills and this alone is enough of a reason to get around to it.
Insulating materials are budget friendly, and you will not need much. Both polystyrene and fiberglass are sold in sheets 8 feet long to match the average room height. Whenever working with fiberglass keep in mind that this is a material not unlike asbestos. It is supposed to be much safer because its neatly organized structure does not break into as little tubes as asbestos, but it results in similar symptoms if you happen to breathe it.
Always wear a good quality full-face mask, goggles, gloves and preferably a long sleeve top. Full body clothing is advised because it causes severe itching if you come in contact with it. Although it has some health risks involved, it is cheap, easy to work with, flame retardant, and amongst the best insulation you will be able to buy.
Polystyrene is not as good at keeping heat in your basement, but you are going to have a good result using it. Similarly easy to work with, but unlike the fiber glass it is only good for low temperature insulation as it is highly flammable. Always comply with fire regulations when working with this material, paying particular attention to keeping wires and hot water pipes away from it.
If only people knew how easy it is to install proper insulation and were aware of the impact it has on heating bills, they would put it to an honorable spot on their priority list and include it in any basement remodeling project.
