Architects Belfast Guide On Problem Spaces

Some people think that if they cannot afford to structurally alter a small room to make it larger, that they are stuck with it and nothing can be done to improve its look and feel. This is certainly not the case. It is quite possible to alter a room’s appearance, even a difficult shaped room, such as a long and narrow, to make it look larger and therefore functional. This can be achieved by the smart use of patterns, colours, textures and arrangement of furniture to make the room look and feel much larger to the eye than it actually is.

For instance diagonal lines, such as floor boards, will seem to push space outwards, while wall coverings that produce a sense of perspective will seem to give extra depth to the room. Ceilings, walls and floors that are covered with reflective materials will also make the room seem larger due to the extra light being spread around. The extra light will have a blurring and softening effect on hard edges of furniture making them feel further apart. The use of mirrors can quite often make a room seem to have a lot more space and of course the extra light generated by the light reflecting off the glass. For instance positioning a mirror on the opposite wall to a window will provide twice the light, including twice the views. Mirrors placed on a ceiling will appear to give extra height to the room.

Built in furniture into alcoves, around the walls or creating window seats help to create space compared to the use of free standing furniture and they take up less space. If you want to use free standing furniture, try using see through tables of glass and fold away chairs that will appear to take up less space. The added advantage is that the chairs can be folded away and stored when not needed. The use of light coloured furniture such as wicker furniture or white painted will look less noticeable and appear less space consuming than the use of dark wooden coloured furniture.

The above are some ideas in dealing with small spaces to make them seem larger however if you require further advice on this, Architects Belfast have lots of experience in solving design solutions.
