Apply A Sealant For Garage Floor Protection

One of the best moves you can make if you do any kind of work or maintenance in your garage at all is to install an epoxy based garage floor sealant to not only protect the floor but also make it safer to work on.  Concrete is a very hard substance and can last a long time but this hardness also brings up two problems.  An epoxy floor covering can help with both of these concerns.

The first is damage to the floor surface.  Since concrete cures to a very hard substance it does not “give” at all well struck with a heavy object.  This means a chunk is most likely to be broken out of the surface.  Divots like these are unsightly but they are also make it hard to roll anything on the floor.  They also will generally allow more crumbling of the concrete and thus the hole gets bigger and bigger.

The second problem is the lack of traction when a petroleum product and water are both present on the surface of the concrete.  This is like warm butter on a hot knife, it offers not traction and if you happen to step in the mixture your feet are more than likely going to go out from underneath you.  Many accidents are caused in the home every year because of this problem.

A garage floor protection system based on epoxy can help remedy both of these problems.  First, by applying a two part epoxy you will provide a very durable and tough surface to protect the concrete from chipping.  In fact, once the epoxy has cured you can even arc weld at bench level and the slag won’t cause a problem.  Also, when you roll out the covering, if you apply a traction agent on top by cast spreading, the floor will offer very good footing even if small amounts of oil and water are mixed.

Applying an epoxy floor covering is well worth the time and is a great project for the weekend, especially when doing other things in the garage such as installing garage door insulation.
